A Lake Barrington woman died Monday morning from injuries suffered in a crash that occurred about 5:58 p.m. Sunday December 24, 2017 on Route 59 near Scott Road (south of Route 22) in North Barrington and Cuba Township.

The 86-year-old woman was a passenger in a Toyota Corolla that was partially submerged in water in wetlands on the west side of Route 59 after a crash with a Toyota Highlander. She was transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where she died Monday morning. Her name was not initially released, pending notification of her family.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla, a 63-year-old woman from Arlington Heights, was injured and transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital near Barrington. Both women were rescued from the partially submerged vehicle by Lake Zurich firefighter/paramedics before they were transported to Lutheran General and Good Shepherd hospitals.

Two people were injured in the Toyota Highlander. The driver of the Toyota Highlander was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital with injuries initially believed to be non-life threatening; and a 55 year-old female passenger, from Round Lake Beach was also transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital with injuries initially believed to be non-life-threatening.

Lake Zurich firefighter/paramedics were assisted by firefighter/paramedics from Barrington Fire Department and Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District.

Preliminary investigation determined that the Toyota Corolla, driven by the 63 year-old Arlington Heights woman, was traveling northbound on Route 59, south of Route 22. A Toyota Highlander was traveling southbound on Route 59 in the same area. The driver of the Toyota Corolla lost control and traveled into the southbound lanes of traffic, striking the Highlander, driven by a 55 year-old male of Round Lake Beach. The Toyota Corolla then left the roadway to the west side of Route 59 near Scott Road into a wetland area. The Toyota Corolla was partially submerged in the water when the 63 year-old female driver from Arlington Heights, and the 86 year-old female from Lake Barrington were rescued.

Light snow occurred Sunday from about 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Roads in the Chicago metropolitan area were slippery with snow and ice.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
