In Racewalking, one foot must appear to be in contact with the ground at all times. Race judges assess gait, and can disqualify racewalker if their gait doesn’t keep one foot alternately on the ground in continuous motion. Racewalking events are usually held on roads or running tracks. Common distances for Racewalking vary from 3000 metres (1.8 mi) up to 100 kilometres (62.1 mi).

The modern Olympic Race Walking events are the 20 km (12.4 mi) race walk (men and women) and 50 km (31 mi) race walk (men only).

According the USA Track & Field (USATF), the 10 km open road Race Walk USA record of 39:22.7 is held by Timothy Seaman (USA) in Storetveitmarsjen, Norway, April 20, 2004.
