Tuesday just after 4:45 p.m. afternoon, an Amtrak conductor was shot while standing on the platform at the Naperville Metra station on 4th Ave.

Naperville police responded just after 4:45 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a shooting at the Naperville Metra station on 4th Avenue east of Washington Street. A man shot from inside the Southwest Chief Amtrak train and struck an Amtrak conductor that was standing on the platform. Police arrested a suspect in his 70s in the shooting of the 45-year-old Amtrak conductor.

The suspect had a disagreement with the conductor about 4:45 p.m., pulled out a handgun and began shooting out the train’s passenger car window. The conductor was shot once in the torso.

Naperville police Cmdr. Louis Cammiso said passengers held the suspect, a white man in his 70s from Wisconsin, until police arrived, and may have saved lives by detaining the gunman.

The conductor, a resident of South suburban Homewood, was transported while conscious and alert to Edward Hospital in Naperville with injuries that were not initially believed to be life-threatening, officials said.

All inbound and outbound trains on the Metra BNSF line were stopped for the rescue and investigation. Metra passengers experienced 10- to 60-minute delays while police investigated the shooting near the Metra station located at 105 E. Fourth Avenue — the corner of 4th Avenue & Ellsworth Street, Naperville, IL.

Amtrak says they will release more information later, and are reviewing how policies were violated. Amtrak requires that passengers board the train with their weapons unloaded and secured.
