Fox News has suddenly canceled “Red Eye,” the popular offbeat news and satire panel program that aired at 3:00 a.m. ET Weekdays and 11:00 p.m. ET on Saturdays. Former host and co-creator Greg Gutfeld confirmed the news of FNC Red Eye’s demise on Twitter Monday night, April 3, 2017, but there was no official mention of the change from Fox News as of Friday, April 7, 2017.

Current host Tom Shillue and co-host Andy Levy will stay on with the network, according to a tweet by Shillue, a former Comedy Central “Daily Show” correspondent.

Red Eye covered quirky details, satire of mainstream news, commentary on personalities, and reviews of strange videos from social media channels. Comedians were often guests on the panel, and a few guest lost their professional relationships with FNC over comments that went over the top while they were guests on the show.

The Red Eye time slot will be filled with a replay of the highly successful political and current affairs program “Tucker Carlson Tonight” which airs weekdays at 9:00 p.m. ET / 8:00 p.m. CT.

Red Eye, with original host Greg Gutfeld, launched in 2007. A short time later the Chicago Tribune filed a federal trademark infringement suit against Fox News because the Chicago Tribune had already published a free daily commuter newspaper called Red Eye, including a website, and television programming on regional cable news channel CLTV. A judge denied the Chicago Tribune’s argument in April, 2007. Tronc, formerly Tribune Publishing, closed down the Tribune’s Red Eye in January 2017, but Red Eye was re-born as a weekly dining and entertainment guide in February 2017. Red Eye on Fox News shut down at the end of their 3:00 a.m. ET episode on Saturday April 8, 2017 after a 10-year run.

Former Fox News Red Eye panelist Bill Schulz replied to other tweets, implying that it wasn’t ratings or cost that shut down Red Eye tweeting: “There’s another reason. And it’s beyond insane. One day. ONE DAY…I’ll explain.”

Reason.TV Interview [9:43] “To me, the best shows are when you’re mixing it up…everything is more interesting when there’s disagreement,” says Andy Levy, co-host of Fox News Channel’s Red Eye, which was described by the New Yorker as “an odd and often funny late-night show that is not exactly satire, and not exactly anything else, either.”
