A work van with a mechanical problem began to smoke and then began to burn on on 58th Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue in Manhattan around 9 a.m.

FDNY firefighters responded about 9:00 a.m. Friday to a report of a vehicle fire on 58th Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue and discovered a van fire that spread to six other vehicles.

The driver of a Gold’s Plumbing work van had pulled over on 58th Street with a mechanical problem that caused smoke to show from the van. Leaking, burning fuel spilled out of the van and trailed down the street gutter while igniting at least six other vehicles. Some explosions occurred as firefighters arrived, and heavy smoke blew into nearby buildings as the vehicles became fully-involved with fire.
