Two men fell through lake ice on Sunday in an unincorporated area of Lake County near north suburban Antioch.

Lake County Sheriff’s deputies about 3:29 p.m. Sunday January 22, 2017 to Channel Lake for a report that two adult males fell through the ice while fishing. A passer by called 9-1-1 after discovering the men calling for help. The men had been in the water for about 20 minutes already.

The men were returning to shore when the ice gave way and both fell into the water about 100 yards off shore. One man was able to pull himself out of the water. The second man, after being soaked in ice cold water for about 30 minutes, was rescued by members of the Antioch Fire Department.

Both men were transported to area hospitals. One man was transported to Saint Catherine’s Hospital in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and the other man was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Both were observed and treated at the hospitals, and their conditions were not considered life threatening.

The sheriff’s office reminds the community due to warm temperatures the ice on the lakes can be dangerously thin.
