John Hersey High School Ranks #3 in Chicago Magazine’s Top 20 Cook County High Schools

Rolling Meadows, Prospect, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove High School Also Make Top 20 in Cook County

Township District 214’s John Hersey High School was named to Chicago magazine’s list of the best suburban high schools in Cook County, which was released this week.

In the Cook County high school category, the Hersey Huskies ranked No. 3, behind Proviso Math and Science Academy in Forest Park (No. 1) and New Trier High School in Winnetka (No. 2).

Chicago magazine joined resources with nonprofit group RTI International and created the following criteria for its best of lists …

test scores,
attendance,
spending per student,
graduation rates
and miscellaneous other data taken from the Illinois Board of Education.

The following stats were compiled for third place John Hersey High School …

Spending per student: $11,820

Freshmen meeting or exceeding state standards: 93 percent

Graduation rate: 92 percent

Hersey was also selected as one of the magazine’s five “innovators.” According to the Chicago Magazine, “innovators” are schools and districts that are leading the way in education. The recognition came from a program developed in the late ’90s by now-retired literature teacher Charles Venegoni. The program combined multiple class subjects to create “a broad-based forum style of teaching modeled after traditional college lectures.

Among Township District 214 school, Rolling Meadows High School ranked 7th, Prospect High School Ranked 9th, Buffalo Grove High School ranked 11th, and Elk Grove Prospect ranked 19th — all spending $11,820 per pupil.

Lisle High School ranked #1 in DuPage County, spending $10,994 per pupil.

Geneva Community High School ranked #1 in Kane County, spending $6,899 per pupil.

Libertyville High School ranked #1 in Lake County, spending $13,116 per pupil.

Woodstock High School ranked #1 in McHenry County, spending $6,593 per pupil.

Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfort ranked #1 in Will County, spending $7,023 per pupil.

No Arlington Heights schools ranked in the top 20 in the elementary school category, while six elementary school ranked in the top 20 from the Village of Schaumburg.
