When a Hanahan, South Carolina firefighter saved a puppy from a burning building, he got a priceless bond in return.

Jake wasn’t moving moving or breathing when a firefighter William Lindler of the Hanahan Fire Department in South Carolina rescued him from a burning shed in April 2015. Jake, a puppy at the time, was transported to a vet where he was treated was treated with antibiotics and morphine for over a month. He has scars from the burns, but he is now the fire station mascot.

In December 2015, Hanahan’s fire chief and mayor proclaimed Jake an honorary firefighter and swore him in as the official mascot for the fire department. Lindler is considering getting Jake trained as an arson detection dog, and has also considered training him as a therapy dog for pediatric burn victims.

Jake is over a year old this month.
