“Mysterious” Green Fireball Seen Over California Probably a Lyrid Meteorite

#ad▼

People hundreds of miles apart all saw the same green fireball in the California sky. Video shows what looks like an asteroid fall towards the earth, and authorities say the object is probably not man-made.

CBS is reporting authorities said the object is probably not man-made. ABC News is reporting personnel at the The Griffith Observatory said “space junk” caused a streak of green light above Southern California

Unfortunately these two reports don’t report what part of the sky the image was captured. If the dashcam view was faced north the “green streak” was likely a Lyrid meteorite. The April Lyrids meteor shower’s annual show was specified to last from April 16 to April 26. The radiant of the meteor shower is located in the constellation Lyra, near this constellation’s brightest star, Alpha Lyrae (proper name Vega). The peak for Lyrids meteor shower is typically around April 22-23 each year.
