South America: Tornado in Southwest Uruguay on Friday; Earthquake in Western Ecuador on Saturday Evening

A tornado hit the southwestern Uruguay city of Dolores Soriano on Friday about 4:00 p.m. The tornado killed four people and injured 200. About 400 structures were damaged or destroyed.

A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck western Ecuador on Saturday evening, killing dozens of people and causing widespread destruction. This video shows raw footage from the region.

An earthquake magnitude 7.8 hit Ecuador with an epicenter near Pedernale and Muisne at 6:58 p.m. Saturday. At least 77 people were killed and 588 were injured.

States of emergency were declared for the provinces of Esmeraldas, Guayas, Los Rios, Manabi, Santa Elena, and Santo Domingo. The quake was felt in country’s capital of Quito, with strong shaking and trembling as far as 100 miles away.
