Lake County Sheriff’s police and McHenry County Sheriff’s police were involved in a shooting that killed a wanted man from Florida shortly before midnight Friday/Saturday. Antioch firefighter/paramedics were called about 11:51 p.m. to the scene of Topper’s Pizzeria — a restaurant and tavern at Illinois 173 and North Lotus Avenue in Antioch. According to the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, the man, identified as Gerald Robert Boyes, age 53, was dead at the scene.

A deputy or deputies fired a shot or shots at Boyes after he brandished a handgun. Police did not release any confirmation on whether Boyes had fired his weapon. A gun was confirmed to be found in Boyes’ possession. He also possessed a Ford Flex sport utility vehicle that was reported stolen out of Florida.

Officers impounded the stolen vehicle.

Boyes was sentenced to more than 60 years for armed robbery with a deadly weapon and grand theft in Broward County, Florida in 1983 and 1984, and escaped from a prison in Orange County in 1989, according to the Florida Department of Corrections. He was sentenced again after escaping in 1992. Hit sentence was one year, and continued is 60-year sentence for armed robbery. Boyes was released on parole in October 2013 but stopped reporting in and was listed as a fugitive, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.

As of April 10, 2016, Gerald Boyes was considered under community supervision (parole state) with a status of “absconder/fugitive” by the Florida Department of Corrections.

The Florida Department of Corrections reported the inmate had aliases of Gerald Boyes, Gerald Robert Boyes Jr, Gerald Brian Ehman, Gerald Bryan Ehman, and Keith Lee Levin.

A separate, unrelated shooting incident was reported at 12:36 a.m. Saturday on Hilldale Avenue near Rena Avenue in unincorporated Antioch about 2.5 miles southeast of incident at Route 173, on the other side of Lake Marie. The incidents were not connected. The second incident on Hilldale Avenue was described as a domestic incident that might have been accidental.
