On March 8, 2016 at approximately 3:45 P.M., a 16 year-old male attempted to rob a patron in the parking lot of the Meineke Recreation Center at 220 E. Weathersfield Way. The offender was armed with a retractable knife and brass knuckles, and demanded money from
the victim.

An off-duty Schaumburg Police Officer, while preparing to leave the parking lot after completing a workout in the Meineke Center, observed the robbery in-progress. The officer saw the victim turn and run back into the building with the armed offender giving chase.

The off-duty Schaumburg police officer exited his vehicle and went into the building to intervene. When the police officer confronted the offender, he identified himself as a police officer, and ordered the offender to put his hands in the air. The offender refused, and a physical confrontation ensued. The officer was able to disarm the offender and, with the eventual assistance of two passersby, restrained the highly combative offender until on-duty police arrived and took custody.

The off-duty officer suffered minor injuries. He was treated at the scene, and was not transported to a hospital. Some of the police officer’s personal property was damaged during the struggle.

The offender was subsequently charged with Attempted Armed Robbery, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Aggravated Battery to a Peace Officer, Resisting a Peace Officer, and Criminal Damage to Property.

The offender was referred to Juvenile Court. The offender was also
wanted on a Bond Forfeiture Warrant for a Battery case out of McHenry County.

The Schaumburg Police Department report they are grateful for the assistance provided by the two citizens and commends the actions taken by the officer. Schaumburg police declared the incident was a fine example of the selflessness and dedication to duty police officers across the country display every day in service to their communities.
