Arlington Heights police have released the identity of the driver of a Honda Element that was killed in a crash with a Metra train Thursday afternoon.

On Thursday, January 21, 2106, at approximately 2:30 PM, the Arlington Heights Police Department and Arlington Heights Fire Department responded to the area of Northwest Highway and Euclid Avenue for a report of a motor vehicle struck by a train.

A subsequent investigation revealed that a 2009 Honda Element traveling on Northwest Highway turned and attempted to travel westbound on Euclid Avenue, against activated railroad crossing signals. While traversing the railroad tracks the vehicle was impacted by a Commuter Metra Train traveling eastbound (inbound) towards the City of Chicago. The vehicle caught fire after impact and was pushed approximately 1500 feet east of the Euclid crossing coming to rest near the intersection of Northwest Highway and Ridge Avenue. The fire was immediately extinguished by the Arlington Heights Fire Department.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Zaiemunnisa Khan, a 61 year old female resident of Rolling Meadows, Illinois died at the scene of the crash. No injuries were sustained to any employees or passengers aboard the train.

Traffic Crash Reconstructionists of the Arlington Heights Police Department continue to investigate this crash. Thus far, all evidence suggests the warning devices at Northwest Highway and Euclid Avenue were in good working order at the time of the incident. The death of Ms. Khan will also be investigated by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office reference case #2016-00364.
