Apple iPhone 6s and Apple iPhone 6s Plus Announced: Better Cameras, Faster, 3D Touch

Sept. 9 — Om Malik, a True Ventures partner, Ben Bajarin, Creative Strategies’ principal analyst, and Nikhil Bhogal, June’s co-founder and a former Apple software engineer, discuss Apple’s updated iPhones with Bloomberg’s Emily Chang on “Bloomberg West.”

Apple introduced the Apple iPhone 6s and the Apple 6s Plus with the iOS9 operating operating today. The most original of new features are 3D Touch and Live Photo.

In 3D Touch, which was previously made available on the iWatch, the new iPhones have a hardware haptic engine that Apple calls the Taptic Engine which senses finger the level of force of pressure and duration. The new haptic sensing by Apple allows users to pop up new menus, activate shortcuts, and generally interact with the iPhone in new ways — for work or for games.

In Live Photos, a short video is embedded with the photo. By pressing on a photo, a user can view a short video of the 1.5 second before and the 1.5 second after the photo. Probably kind of gimmicky, the function is on by default, and will probably take up a lot of additional memory. Perhaps why one of the best bits of news is that Apple is now offering more iCloud storage at better prices. Apple will now charge $.99 per month for 50GB of storage, instead of only 20GB.

Storage on iCloud for 200GB now costs $2.99 a month (previously $3.99) and 1TB of storage now costs $9.99 per month (previously $19.99). The fate of the 500GB plan was unknown at the time of this report.

Google currently offers 15GB for free … and that’s without even the prerequisite of any phone purchase.

Autofocus is even more accurate, as Apple claims it has added more autofocus sensors. Also with 50 percent more pixels, Apple claims engineers have countered some side effects of adding additional pixel sensors that ironically decreases the quality of pictures. The Apple development team has worked to reduce crosstalk and noise, which occur when more pixel sensors are packed on a grid. “A great technology called ‘deep trench isolation’ to separate the diodes and make them more accurate.” The deep trench technology basically blocks light from crosstalking from a neighboring sensor. Color filters were also placed closer to the sensors.

HD video is now available with 4K resolution.

The main (rear-facing) camera is 12 MP. Keep in mind the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has had a 16 MP camera since September 2014. Nevertheless, Apple’s Peter Schiller claimed that more and more Android users are coming over to Apple iOS. Apple has introduced a transfer feature that will facilitate bringing comparable Android App to the iPHONE.

The new iPhone also some with a 5MP Facetime Camera.

The iPhone 6S is also supposed to get faster wireless speeds over both Wi-Fi and LTE.
