A triple homicide in Florida is being investigated as a possible ritualistic killing connected to the recent blue moon, a sheriff said Tuesday. Three bodies were found in a Pensacola home on Friday.

Police believe a killing at 4605 Deerfield Drive in Pensacola, Florida was a ritual killing — indicated by the discovery of blunt force trauma, victims with slit throats, the discovered position of the bodies, and that the person of interest is connected to a belief or religion that could be involved in a ritual killing.

The three victims — Voncile Smith, 77, and her two sons, Richard, 49, and John, 47 — were found after a welfare check on Friday, July 31, 2015 according to Escambia County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Andrew Hobbes. According to Hobbes, Richard Smith worked for U.S. Homeland Security and a supervisor contacted the sheriff’s office to report Richard Smith missing. Police dispatched a unit to check the home at 4605 Deerfield Drive in Pensacola, and the crime scene was discovered.

Police reported the murder might be related to some type of Wiccan ritual killing. Wicca is a religion that claims to draw on the pre-Christian traditions of Western Europe, but supposedly does not encourage the practice of ritual killings.

According to multiple sources, most practitioners engage in some form of magical practice and nature worship, and may believe in a variety of deities. The religion is considered a modern pagan, witchcraft religion, and many followers use the symbol of the pentagram.
