Chicago police about 6:20 a.m. Tuesday responded to the 3000 block of North Harlem Avenue to a possible hostage/barricade situation. Police quickly blocked Harlem Avenue between Wellington Avenue and Belmont Street.

A man armed with a handgun held two children hostage Tuesday morning in an apartment in the top floor of an apartment building in the Montclare neighborhood, west of Brickyard Mall on Chicago’s Northwest Side.

Chicago police said the man had kicked his wife out of the apartment and then barricaded himself in the apartment with two children, ages 4 and 9. He released the children unharmed about 10:00 a.m. after talking to police.

Detectives and HBT (Hostage/Barricade Team) officers responded and communicated with the man before he released the children. Chicago Fire Department paramedics, who were standing by with firefighters at Harlem Avenue and Wellington Avenue checked the well-being of all involved in the apartment as soon as the incident was secured. No injuries were reported.
