NBC 5 Chicago about 10:15 p.m. projected with unofficial numbers that Bruce Rauner has beaten Pat Quinn by a margin of almost 4 percent.

Rauner has promised during the election that he would lower taxes and raise funding for education while running the state like a business.

His slogan is “Shake up Springfield. Bring Back Illinois.”

Preliminary results of an exit poll conducted for The Associated Press and television networks showed Quinn was getting support from residents of Chicago, people earning less than $50,000 a year, and people who strongly approved of President Barack Obama’s performance.

The combined cost for both candidates is reported to be $100 million with Rauner paying $21 million with his own funds.
