Village of Arlington Heights Roadway Crack Sealing Program Under Way

#ad▼

A crack sealing maintenance program is scheduled to start September 25, 2014 in the Village of Arlington Heights, weather permitting. The purpose of this program is to help extend the life cycle of street pavements. The program lasts for about two weeks and is an efficient procedure that helps prevent moisture from getting under pavement and thereby increasing the rate of roadway degradation.

Crack sealing is usually done three years after a roadway resurfacing or reconstruction to minimize additional cracking. The work is messy, but necessary to extend the life cycle of pavement. Before applying sealant, workers must rout cut the existing cracks and use an air compressor to blow away any loose dirt or debris from the cracked area. A worker than applies a hot liquid sealant to the clean crack. Finally, a fine dust or sand is blown over the material to reduce vehicle tracking

The Village of Arlington Heights asks that residents and visitors please be patient with the process. Street sweepers will clean the streets generally 24 hours after the sealant is properly set. If you have questions about the program, please contact Bill Oakley, Public Works Street Unit Crew Chief, at 847-368-5835 or email him at [email protected].
