The owners of a house teetering on the edge of a crumbling cliff in Whitney, Texas decided to burn the house down to avoid paying for the removal of the full weight of unburned debris that would have tumbled into Lake Whitney, and to prevent any environmental damage that could be caused by the collapse of $700,000 home.

The 4,000 square foot house valued at $700,000 was set on fire at 11:45 a.m. Friday and was burned down. Hill County officials and the Heart of Texas Demolition LLC are working to pull back the remaining debris from the cliff’s edge.

Randy Cephus, a spokesman for the Fort Worth District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, reported that the erosion, the weight of the home’s leveling material and drought conditions contributed to the home’s collapse. Heavy rains may have also contributed to the collapse.
