Large Building Explosion, Building Collapse with Fire, Park Avenue Near East 114th-116th Street, New York City

Former New York City fire marshal Gene West adds expect perspective on a New York City building collapse and fire in East Harlem on Bloomberg Television’s “Market Makers.”

FDNY firefighters and NPYD police responded about 9:00 a.m. Wednesday to an apartment building explosion and collapse with a fire on Park Avenue in the area of E 114 to 116 Street near Park Avenue. The address of the main fire/explosion building is 1646 Park Avenue. The building is reported to be 5 or 6 stories. A witness reports that it appears that about one-half of the building is collapsed.

There is a report of a people trapped inside the apartment building. Four or five buildings are possibly affected according to witnesses. A grocery store is possibly on the first floor of one of the buildings.

Residents heard a loud explosion about 9:00 a.m. A witness also reported it appears that people were injured by shrapnel.

Report of 11 people injured as of 10:20 a.m. ET.
