Stuck? Stuck! Stuck!! Child’s Tongue Stuck on Pole at Washington School, Evanston

#ad▼

Evanston firefighter/paramedics responded about 3:49 p.m. Wednesday to a report that a child had his tongue stuck to a pole outside at Washington School, 914 Ashland Avenue. The child’s mother called for help. No word on whether the child was injured, but at near zero temperatures, there is a chance that some tissue damage could have occurred.

It probably happens every winter, and it happened just over a week ago in New Hampshire. Maddie Gilmartin, 12, stuck to the flagpole for 15 minutes until her parents were able to free her tongue using warm water. There was bleeding while her parents tried to remove her tongue from the flag pole. Some swelling in her mouth is expected to last around six weeks.

Air temperature at Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling/Prospect Heights, about 15 miles west of Evanston, was 14 degrees at 3:52 p.m. with a wind chill of zero.
