Mariano’s was remarkably well-stocked even though their lot was full and their aisles were filled with shoppers.

Shoppers joked about the “run-on” and speculated whether people thought the freeze meant the world was ending or they just didn’t want to have to shop when temperatures drop well below zero for two or three days.

Jewel’s Vail Street Market store in downtown Arlington Heights store was full with long lines and a packed parking lot. There were times when there were no parking spaces available at the lot at 122 North Vail Avenue. The downtown store situation was a little complicated by malfunctioning railroad gates, which remained down from about 9:00 a.m. until about 3:00 p.m.
