Shawn Kuykendall, who had borrowed a boat from a friend, had docked at Georgetown’s Washington Harbor Saturday evening. Police were responding to a report of a distress call for people in the water. With the boat’s lights and sirens activated, the boat’s driver made a speedy turn, but the turn wasn’t sharp enough to avoid hitting Kuykendall’s friend’s boat, which sank, and another boat.

The crash put a large gash in the side of the boat, and the boat sank.

Police asked one of the owners, “Are you injured?” The owner answered no, and the police replied, “Then relax.”

THe US Coast Guard is investigating the crash.
