Ask Paul B: I Need a Hero, Not a Family Suck-Up

#ad▼

Dear Paul B,

I am an original Arlington Heights resident, and I love reading all the different Cardinal pages..especially the weather and Crime-BLog. I just discovered you a few months ago, and I think you’re really direct — in a good way. I read a story about a young couple that might have issues because the families were so different, and the couple said they didn’t care. You said they SHOULD CARE. I agree 100%. I am coming out of a marriage where my four children and I were treated with little respect, love, compassion, or generosity. If my in-laws ever asked me how I was, I would have been in a state of shock. I am a very nice person, and my kids are typical kids. My husband NEVER stuck up for any of us, especially me. He feared rocking their boat, and allowed them to walk right over all of us. After nearly 20 years, it has finally taken its toll. I would try my best to ask my ex-husband to stand up for us, and he promised he would. I have stopped waiting. Other issues have arisen, so it wasn’t solely our poor relationship that broke the camels back, but it surely didn’t help at all. I think young people (or anyone,) need to take all the factors into consideration before they “take the plunge.” It’s not all fun and games, and love alone cannot conquer all. Thanks for helping to enlighten others, I do think it helps.

Dear Cathy,

You have said it all, and I thank you. I am sorry for your break-up, but this is also a new beginning for all of you. It’s a circle game, for sure. I can add one proverb: You marry the family, but live with the wife…and sometimes BOTH–BIG OUCH!
