The Wheeling Police Department is investigating the death of an 8-year-old child following a drowning incident that occurred on Thursday night, June 11, 2026.
At approximately 8:20 p.m. Thursday, June 11, 2026, police officers were dispatched to the block of 1600 Ottawa Court in Wheeling to a report of a missing child who was believed to have entered the pond located behind the residences in the area. Family members had been actively searching for the child when a neighbor advised responding police officers and fire department personnel that they had heard a loud splash coming from the pond shortly before the child was reported missing. Officers and fire department personnel immediately began a coordinated search of the area. During the search, the child was located unresponsive in the water and recovered by rescue personnel.
The child was transported by Wheeling Fire Department paramedics to to Northwest Community Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The incident remains under investigation, and initially investigators have found no evidence to suggest foul play, according to the Wheeling Police Department.
“Our hearts go out to the child’s family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic loss,” Chief of Police Joseph Kopecky said. “This is a devastating incident for our entire community, and we ask that everyone keep the family in their thoughts during this difficult time.”
