The Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) is shut down in both directions near Westchester in Cook County Thursday for an investigation that includes bomb technicians assigned to the scene.
Police first responded about 10:05 a.m. Thursday, June 4, 2026 in Westchester on I-290 westbound near Mannheim Road, with ISP requesting assistance from multiple local agencies. The scene is also located near Bellwood, Maywood, and Melrose Park, what a shooting occurred at an Amazon warehouse on 5th Avenue in Melrose Park.
ISP referred to an “explosion” in their dispatches. The vehicle at the center of the investigation was observed with sunroof glass and window glass blown out with airbag deployment.
I-290 eastbound and westbound lanes were closed near Mannheim Road, and the Mannheim Road bridge over I-290 was also closed, but was re-opened just before 1:00 a.m.
I-88 EAST to the Tri-State Tollway near Oakbrook, west of the scene at I-290/Mannheim Road, was also closed.
Extended road closures are expected, and police advise pedestrians and motorists to avoid the area.
The Village of Westchester confirmed that their local police were assisting at the request of ISP, closing Westchester Boulevard closed at Kitchener Avenue.
The Village of Westchester indicated there was no threat to the area.
Significant backups with standstill delays were in both directions.
