Stop Sign Disobeyed, Extrication at “Property Damage Only” Crash at Haddow Ave and St. James St, Arlington Heights

Police, firefighters and paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2026 to a report of a crash with entrapment at Haddow Avenue and St James Street in Arlington Heights. A woman reported no initial injuries, but that she was stuck behind her driver’s side door that was damaged in the crash and would not open. Firefighters popped open the door to help the woman out of her car. Initially, she did not report any injuries, and she refused transportation by EMS to the hospital.




The crash involved a black sedan and a white compact SUV. According to the woman driving the white SUV, she was on her way to work driving eastbound on St. James Street when the female driver of the black sedan disregarded the stop sign that controls eastbound traffic on Haddow Avenue. The intersection is controlled by 2-way stop signs that control northbound and southbound traffic on Haddow Avenue. The stop signs are marked with warning information signs that CROSS TRAFFIC DOES NOT STOP. There were no tire skid marks at the intersection for southbound Haddow Avenue. There were tire skid marks and metal marks on the pavement from the white SUV that was pushed southeast about 27 feet onto private property on the southeast corner of Haddow Avenue and St. James Street.

Initially, no information was available regarding citations or charges for the driver of the black sedan.

No structural damage occurred at private property, but the intersection crash illustrates the importance of private property defense landscaping for property owners of corner lots.
