LAS VEGAS High temperatures brought dangerous heat to much of the Southwest on Sunday as many parts of the region were coming off record-breaking heat days and bracing for more heat on Sunday. Temperatures were in the triple digits in Las Vegas, reaching at least 110 degrees Sunday. On Saturday, 200 people were treated for heat problems as temperatures hit 114 degrees in Las Vegas. Paramedics in Nevada responded to a home without air conditioning and found an elderly man dead inside the house.

Phoenix Fire Department responded to 98 heat-related calls within the metro area since Friday morning., but no fatalities were reported.

A 119-degree high in Phoenix on Saturday marked the fourth-hottest day in metro Phoenix since authorities started keeping temperature records more than 110 years ago.

The high temperature forecast for the metro area for Sunday was 116. Temperatures are forecast to drop slightly in Phoenix within the coming days as monsoon storms are expected to make their way through the state. Such storms could bring cloud cover but could produce more humidity and possibly contribute to dust storms.

In California high temperatures are drying out the brush or wildfire which can increase the fire risk.

Triple-digit heat also baked valleys and desert regions of Southern California, while metropolitan Phoenix was expected to experience a slight drop in temperatures after a record-breaking hot Saturday.

Several Southern California communities set same-day record highs Saturday including Palm Springs, tied a record high 122 degrees.

Death Valley, the hottest place on the planet, reached 127 degrees Saturday, which is well below the all-time record high of 134 degrees, set on July 10, 1913.

Temperatures in Death Valley, California, are soaring. CNN’s Tory Dunnan has the story.
