DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Lombard Chief of Police Joe Grage announced Wednesday, December 24, 2025 that Judge Joshua Dieden has denied the State’s motion to detain pre-trial a Chicago female suspect accused of causing a crash after she had been drinking that caused injuries to an entire family, and severely injured a ten-year-old boy. In his order, Judge Dieden noted that while “the allegations of the defendant’s conduct are tragic” and nothing that occurs in court “is meant to minimize the tragic nature of such an offense,” the Court must determine whether there “are no conditions or combination of conditions that can mitigate the danger she poses.” Jaquelin Onofre Reyes, age 27, of the 940 block Lawler Avenue in Chicago, appeared in First Appearance Court Wednesday morning charged with four counts of Aggravated DUI – Great Bodily Harm, a Class 4 Felony. Following her appearance, and over the State’s objections, Onofre Reyes was given pre-trial release with conditions including no possession or consumption of alcohol or drugs, SCRAM electronic monitoring and no contact with the victims.

On Thursday, December 23, 2025, at approximately 12:12 p.m., the Lombard Police Department was dispatched to the area of Route 53 and the Illinois Prairie Path regarding a vehicle crash involving a Hummer SUV and an Infiniti SUV. The initial investigation indicated that Onofre Reyes was driving the Hummer SUV southbound on Route 53 when she entered into the northbound lane of Route 53 in an attempt to pass traffic in front of her. Allegedly, when Onofre Reyes attempted to re-enter the southbound lane of traffic, she collided with another car, crossed back into oncoming traffic and crashed into the northbound Infiniti SUV containing a family of four including two minor children ages seven and ten. The entire family was transported to a local hospital for medical attention. The ten-year-old boy, who suffered extensive severe injuries, has since been transferred to another medical facility for further surgery. When processing the scene, authorities observed two open alcoholic-based beverages in the interior of the defendant’s Hummer SUV. Allegedly, Onofre Reyes’ BAC was .238.

“It is alleged that at the time of this crash, Onofre Reyes’ BAC was .238, or nearly three times the legal limit. What I find particularly infuriating in this case is that alcohol-related crashes, such as is alleged in this case, are 100% avoidable. This holiday weekend, I urge everyone, please do not get behind the wheel of a car if you have been drinking. Call a ride-sharing service or a sober friend for a ride or stay where you are. I wish all the victims, particularly the ten-year-old boy, a full and speedy recovery. I thank the Lombard Police Department for their work on this case as well as the Carol Stream Police Department and DuPage MERIT Major Crash Reconstruction Team. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorney Alyssa Rabulinski for her efforts on this case.”

— DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin

“This incident involved a reckless and irresponsible individual who allegedly chose to operate a motor vehicle while impaired with complete disregard for the safety of others,” Grage said. “Unfortunately, this decision led to a crash that caused significant injuries to innocent people. The Lombard Police Department is committed to holding those who choose to drive impaired accountable. I am proud of our officers’ work in conducting a thorough investigation that led to these charges. Additionally, I would like to thank the DuPage MERIT Major Crash Reconstruction Team for their assistance as well as State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and the work of his team that led to securing these very serious and appropriate charges against the defendant.”

— Lombard Chief of Police Joe Grage

Onofre Reyes’ next court appearance is scheduled for January 20, 2026, in front of Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
