A frigid airmass is descending into the Central U.S. this weekend, spreading into the East Coast on Monday while the West warms up. Expect snowy, very cold and windy conditions from the Northern Plains to the Great Lakes this weekend.
A band of lake effect snow will migrate from near Chicago to Michigan City through the morning. There is a low to medium (40 to 60%) chance for a slushy 1 to 3 inches of snow to accumulate with the band of snow, mainly in northwestern Indiana.
A period of dangerous and intense lake effect snow is expected tonight into Monday in northeastern Illinois and northwestern Indiana. The peak coverage of lake effect snow should be between 12 AM and 10 AM Monday. Travel is not advised during periods of lake effect snow.
A gradual warming trend, possibly accompanied by periods of breezy winds, is expected toward the middle of next week.
Downtown Arlington Heights Snowfall Forecast
SUNDAY 3AM to 8AM …0.6 inch
SUN-MON 6PM to 8AM … 4.4 inches
MON 8AM to 12 PM … Lake Effect Snow localized and unpredictable, but somewhere in Chicagoland there might be 12-18 inches of snowfall.
Total System Snowfall Forecast, excluding Lake Effect Snow 8AM to 12 PM Monday … 5.0 inches
The low pressure system responsible for bringing rain and snow to the area overnight Saturday and Sunday will continue shifting eastward Sunday morning allowing for precipitation to end from west to east. The exception will be near Lake Michigan as a band of lake effect snow (already extending across Cook County) gradually pivots east-southeastward through the morning hours. As low-level convergence increase down the spine of the lake after daybreak, the intensity of the lake effect snow band should similarly increase (roughly as the band is moving from northeastern Illinois into northwestern Indiana). In northwest Indiana, a quick 2-3″ of snow may fall across parts of Lake and Porter counties between 8 and 11 AM CT.

By early afternoon, the the first of two lake effect snow bands should be east of Chicagoland. Cooling low-level thermal profiles within pockets of stratocumulus clouds look to be supportive of occasional flurries throughout the day on Sunday, with highs only topping off in the low to mid 30s. A few bonafide snow showers may develop by early Sunday evening (6PM to 8PM), though little to no snow accumulation is expected. Attention then turns about 9 PM toward the threat for unusually intense and dangerous lake effect snow Sunday Night and into Monday about 8 AM, when about 4.4 inches is forecast.
Strong winds will also impact the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest through Monday afternoon, due to a tightening pressure gradient caused by convergence of the digging trough in the East and the approaching ridge from the West.
A powerful polar vortex lobe descending down Lake Michigan into our area, followed by the effect of a mesolow in from Lake Superior is forecast to cause unusually intense lake snow that is forecast to include northwest Indiana and northeast Illinois — possibly as far west as I-39 and as far south as Central Illinois.
Scattered to isolated rain showers and thunderstorms will spread from the Ohio Valley to Mid-Atlantic/Northeast Sunday. Rainfall will quickly come to an end over New England on Monday. The Arctic airmass will expand from the Great Plains and Mississippi Valley today into the East Coast on Monday. Overnight lows likely in the 20s and 30s through Monday night prompted freeze watches and warnings from parts of the Southern Plains across the Lower Mississippi Valley and into the Southeast/Mid-Atlantic.
Weather Radarat 3:50 AM shows precipitation indicating the last band of Saturday – Sunday overnight passing northeast Illinois.

How much snow are we talking? Much like a summer thunderstorm, lake effect snow is very localized leading to widely varying totals. This map represents a possible outcome, though some areas may pick up much more and much less. Note the sharp gradient near I-355 and I-55. (4/5) pic.twitter.com/VcxMcStTtd
