Two stray horse incidents involving a total of three horses occurred overnight in the past few days. Both the McHenry County Health Department and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office posted notices about stray horse in the past few days.

The McHenry County Health Department is seeking the public’s help locating the owner of a stray white male horse found running loose near Route 176 and Millstream Road in unincorporated Marengo on Thursday, October 9, 2025 between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.

A white male horse was found running loose between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Thursday, October 9, near Route 176 and Millstream Road in Marengo. He is currently being housed at a private farm.

If you are the owner, please contact McHenry County Animal Control & Adoption Center at (815) 459-6222 as soon as possible.

The stray hold for this horse will end at the close of business on Monday, October 20.

Additionally, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the community’s help to locate the owners of two horses found wandering on a property early Monday morning, October 13, 2025 near Woodstock in McHenry County.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded about 12:40 a.m. Monday, October 13, 2025 to an animal complaint indicating two horses were wandering near a property owner’s home in the block of 3100 Vermont Road south of Secor Road in unincorporated Woodstock. The resident reported horses were contained on her property but that she could not keep them.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputies checked addresses and properties in the area, but no property owners were aware of who the horses’ owners could be.

McHenry County Sheriff’s issued an alert on their app and on Facebook and X at 1:51 a.m. Monday, October 13, 2025, asking for the community’s help.

Two horses have been located wandering the 3200 block of Vermont Rd in Woodstock. Two mares roughly 3-5 years of age, one black and one Buckskin. The horses are being housed by an area citizen in the meantime while we locate the owners. If you are the owner of the horses, please contact McHenry County Sheriff’s Office at 815-338-2144

The two mares are approximately three to five years old, one black and the other buckskin. A photo of the horses was not available from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

A property owner in the area is housing the two horses until authorities can locate their owners. The owners of the two horses are asked to call the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office at 815-338-2144.
