Male Pedestrian, Age 65, Struck and Killed on Route 22 Near Rainbow Rd North Barrington

Lake County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigators are investigating a a fatal car versus pedestrian crash that occurred in North Barrington yesterday evening.

Lake County Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters and paramedics from the Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department responded about 6:55 p.m. Tuesday, February 27, 2024 to a report a car versus pedestrian traffic crash. Lake County Sheriff’s deputies upon arrival found a 65-year-old man of North Barrington in the ditch line, who had died from the reported crash.




The driver of a Ford Explorer, who was not injured, immediately dialed 911 after the crash, and was cooperative with the investigation, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Preliminary investigation shows a 2013 Ford Explorer, driven by a 47-year-old man of Geneva, was traveling eastbound on Route 22, in the area of Rainbow Road. As the driver of the Ford Explorer traveled eastbound, he struck the pedestrian, who was walking on the south shoulder of the roadway. The pedestrian was wearing dark colored clothing and Route 22 is unlit in this area.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and is conducting an autopsy on the pedestrian.

The crash is under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.

The intersection of Route 22 and Rainbow Road is located about half way between Route 59 and Route 12.

Route 22, which continues west from Main Street in Lake Zurich is located in unincorporated North Barrington. The Speed Limit on Route 22 is 45 MPH.

Route 22 at the crash scene is a 2-lane rural highway with narrow shoulders, no parkway and no sidewalks. The intersection is a T-intersection with no crosswalks. Rainbow Road heads south into a residential neighborhood.

There was an approaching storm at the time of the crash, and light sporadic showers were in the area. Sunset Tuesday evening was 5:40 p.m. with complete darkness at the time of the crash.
