Speeding Awareness Day Tuesday, July 25, 2023.

The Arlington Heights Police Department joined law enforcement agencies from eleven states (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri) on July 26th for this year’s high visibility Speed Awareness Day enforcement campaign.

Speed is a leading contributory cause in all crashes involving motor vehicles. This type of driving behavior and attitude has resulted in high crash numbers, increased injuries, and fatalities. Nationwide, in 2021, nearly 29% of the 42,939 traffic fatalities involved speeding, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The most recent data for Illinois shows in 2021 there were 1,780 speed-related fatalities or 32.9% of all 5,410 fatal crashes.

— Illinois Association of Chief of Police

The speed awareness campaign had a twofold approach: to combine increased zero-tolerance enforcement with effective communication to road users on the importance of obeying the speed limit. High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) is a proven countermeasure for reinforcing driver compliance with posted speed limits.

Results of Arlington Heights Police Enforcement Efforts:

54 Speeding Citations: (9 citations 11-14 mph over, 40 citations 15-20 mph over, 3 citations 21-25 mph over, and 2 citations 26-34 mph over the posted speed limit)

8 Speed Related Warnings Issued

10 Distracted Driving Citations

2 Arrests for Suspended Driver’s Licenses

24 Other Various Moving and Equipment Citations

Officials from the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Region 5, Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois Tollway, Illinois State Police, Illinois Sheriff’s Association, American Automobile Association, AAA, CN Railroad, and the Illinois Truck Enforcement Association also met at the Illinois Tollway headquarters, 2700 Ogden Avenue in Downers Grove at the former helipad site..

The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness and save lives. There is no reason to speed, it is unnecessary and endangers everyone on the road. SPEEDING WRECKS LIVES!
