Chicago police responded about 4:45 p.m. to a report of a battery in progress which developed into a major disturbance at Ford City Mall. The police described the incident as mainly “kids running around” where the rap group “Mindless Behavior” was scheduled to appear at 2:00 p.m. A CTA bus driver was injured on the south side of the mall near the IHOP. Police and paramedics responded to a report of glass shattered, and a bus driver injured near the Wendy’s at 5:43 p.m. The injured bus driver was transported to Holy Cross Hospital. A youth was also transported to Advocated Christ Community Hospital in Oak Lawn.

An injured CTA driver was also reported at 79th Street and Pulaski, but neither the driver nor the bus were found.

Injured person at 78th and Cicero — unknown status.

Unconfirmed reports of looting.

Westbound traffic is cut off at 76th and Pulaski. Cicero Avenue is shut down from 67th Street to 79th Street. A Chicago Police helicopter responded to provide aerial surveillance of crowds and crowd movement.

Fire department staging was at 76th and Cicero. Firefighters were released from staging about 6:45 p.m.

Police are conducting one group arrest for the melee. At least 20 people are reported arrested. Four female juveniles are among the arrested subjects.

Police were also working to evacuate groups safely in buses. CTA buses were rushed to the scene to evacuate and disperse the crowds into safe areas. Groups of people were moving together in numbers of about 70 people. Groups were moving into neighborhoods southeast of a Firestone Automotive Center, but were moved back toward the Ford City Mall for protection of neighborhoods and private property, and orderly dispersal on buses.

“Mindless Behavior” is an American boy band, best known for the singles “My Girl” and “Mrs. Right”, produced by Walter Millsap. An appearance by the group “Mindless Behavior” was scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday February 23, 2013 at Ford City Mall.

Mindless Behavior has toured with the Backstreet Boys, Justin Bieber and Jason Derülo, and was the sole opening act for Janet Jackson’s 2011 tour.

  1. This animalistic behavior must be stopped! It’s no wonder law-abiding people are abandoning the South Side and South Suburbs.
