Firefighters, and paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 6:08 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2021 to a report of the smell of smoke in a home in the block of 1200 Weston Drive in Arlington Heights. Engine 4’s crew on arrival reported nothing showing from the home.

Firefighters also responded at about 6:13 p.m. to a house in the block of 1100 West Nichols Road to a report that the electric power came back on, and then sparks came out of an outlet. Firefighters a short time later investigated several homes in the area with similar electrical problems.

ComEd had been working in the area since about 3:33 p.m., according to a ComEd report.

Firefighters were investigating a total of at least seven homes on Weston Drive, Nichols Road, Harvard Avenue and Thurston Place for problems related to electric power. In some homes, sparks, smoke odor, actual smoke, or tripped circuit breakers were reported. One or two homeowners reported smoke coming from a cable box.

Fire command reported that the early investigation points to an incident that occurred when workers in the area were charging a lift station. According to Village of Arlington Heights records there is a sanitary lift station known as the Terramere Lift Station at 4100 North Harvard Avenue in Arlington Heights, which is apparently located near backyards and side yards on Harvard Avenue near Creekside Park. Initially, there was no confirmation from officials that the Terramere Lift Station was the lift station associated with today’s incident.

Sanitary Lift Stations are installed in areas where sewage cannot be moved by using the force of gravity through underground sewage pipes. Lift stations lift wastewater and sewage to a higher elevation so that transfer can re-connect with pipes that use gravity for wastewater and sewage transfer.
