Orlando, Florida WKMG reporter Jessica Sanchez was reporting live from Bourbon Street in New Orleans ahead of the Super Bowl. when a woman videobomber interrupted her and stood in the background while talking over the reporter at the news camera. Sanchez quickly turned the tables on the videobomber: “We were just talking about the STD rate that’s going on here. So how long have you had an STD?” The woman replied that she didn’t have an STD. Then Sanchez asked, “Oh, then why did you want to do an interview?” Sanchez asked. The woman retreated fairly quickly and Sanchez returned to her report.

Reporter Sanchez demonstrated immaturity, mean spiritness, a lack of wisdom, and a lack of professional experience in dealing with a live story. Settings like Bourbon Street, Vegas, sports games, and rock concerts frequently have many exuberant but not necessarily drunk and some drunk bystanders who are anxious for their 5 seconds of camera time. Instead of sticking to her story, unwisely and possibly costly to her station if the bystander sues for defamation, Sanchez threw her story away and used the station’s air time to try to publicly humiliate the bystander. Sanchez should have ignored the woman and continued with her reporting. Instead Sanchez hijacked the station’s time by inviting the woman into a fake interview on the station’s time and expense to settle a grudge. Even high school reporters know better than to resort to the foolish antics of Sanchez. Thought that particular bystander quickly realized that she was being maligned and she walked away, Ms. Sanchez may not find her next target non violent.

Had the ‘STD Lady’ – to which she will forever be referred to thanks to the YouTube video and countless re-posted blogs and websites – been a blonde (just saying) the comments that have flooded the internet would have been far less favorable toward Ms. Sanchez.
Wonder if WKMG (or perhaps, the Faux Network by then?) will convince their intrepid (read; gullible, expendable) ‘traffic anchor’ to cover SB14 in Jersey?

Well, Snooki, if she’d been blonde there would be no accusations of racism at least (just saying). Not defending Sanchez, she got all ghetto in a heartbeat, and clearly she wasn’t doing a serious report when she was fingering the mardi gras beads around her neck, but that’s honestly what makes this good. And as long as we’re talking racially tinted reactions a lot of what I’m seeing is along the lines of lil’ Miss Quinciera is lucky the woman exercised some restraint cause you don’t talk to a sista like that… as if Sanchez being a unprofessional reporter excuses the other lady for being an annoying drunk.
