Chicago’s First 7-Day Stretch of 70 Degrees Since Weather Records Began in 1871 — Includes 3 Record-Breaking Highs, 1 Record High Minimum

#ad▼

November 2020 brought a treat of 8 mild days from Tuesday, November 3, 2020 to Tuesday, November 10, 2020. Seven days were in the 70s and one day hit 69°F. Three of the days — Sunday November 8, 2020 through Tuesday November 10, 2020 broke records. Chicago averages only one November day in the 70s.

For many people the mild weather amounts to a shorter or easier-to-endure upcoming winter season. Many enjoyed outdoor workouts, especially those who are avoiding gym workouts because of COVID-19, and many enjoyed late season yard work in pleasant conditions.

DAILY OBSERVED HIGH TEMPERATURES AND RECORDS TIED OR BROKEN

Tuesday, November 3: 69°F

Wednesday, November 4: 74°F Tied record from 1978

Thursday, November 5: 71°F

Friday, November 6: 74°F

Saturday, November 7: 72°F

Monday, November 9: 76°F Broke record of 74°F from 1999

Tuesday, November 10: 75°F Broke record of 71°F from 1949

The 76°F observed on November 8 and November 9 tied two other days marking the 8th warmest November day on record. The 76 highs also were the warmest November temperatures since 1978 (79 on November 5, 1978). The warmest November high temperature on record is 81 on November 1, 1950.

Regarding record high minimum temperatures (warmest lows), the reading of 63 degrees on Monday November 9, 2020 broke the daily record of 59 from 1999. The 63°F morning low also tied the all time November high minimum temperature of 63 from November 6, 1924 and November 7, 1975.

The seven 70s in a row in 2020 marks the longest stretch of 70s in November, surpassing five 70s in a row on November 15-19, 1953.

The latest stretch of six 70s in a row was previously marked from October 27-November 1, 1950.

The latest stretch of seven consecutive days of 70s was previously marked from Tuesday, October 24 to Monday, October 30, 1989, which was actually part of an 8-day stretch that began on Monday, October 23, 1989.

A stretch of four consecutive November days in the 70s previously occurred only four times: 1938, 1953, 1978, and 2015.

Three Novembers had five days in the 70s: 1938, 1964, and 1999 (not consecutive).

Two Novembers had six days in the 70s: 1953 ( including 5 consecutive) and 1975 (not consecutive).

While 70s have occurred as late in the season as early December (December 2, 1982 and December 3, 2012), having a stretch of 4 to 5 consecutive days this late averages out to about once every 35 years. A stretch of 7 days this late in a year had not been seen at the official Chicago observing site dating back to 1871.
