Rollover Crash with Fire and Ejection Kills Father and Son on WB Interstate 90 Near Marengo

Illinois State Police troopers and firefighter/paramedics from Hampshire Fire Protection District responded just before 11:00 p.m. Monday July 6, 2020 to a rollover crash involving a vehicle fire and ejection on westbound I-90 near Mile Post 39 near Harmony (unincorporated) and Marengo in McHenry County.

Harold E. Switzer Jr., 49, and Harold Switzer III, 26, of Belvidere near Rockford, were both ejected from a Pontiac vehicle near Mile Post 39 as the vehicle rolled over several times. Mile Post 39 is east of Marengo Toll Plaza 7 and west of the US 20 interchange.

Both men died as a result of the crash in McHenry County. Initially Illinois State Police crash investigators did not know why the vehicle left the interstate or who was driving. All lanes of westbound I-90 were closed until 5:00 a.m. for crash recovery and an extended crash investigation. There are no curves on the stretch of I-90 near the scene.
