Fauci warns there could be up 100,000 new cases of coronavirus per day during his testimony at the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing titled “‘COVID-19: Update on Progress Toward Safely Getting Back to Work and Back to School’.

Anthony Fauci, M.D. testified to a Senate committee Tuesday June 30, 2020 that he would “not be surprised” if the United States begins reporting as many as 100,000 new coronavirus cases per day, adding, “I’m very concerned and not satisfied with what’s going on because we’re going in the wrong direction.” Fauci said. He added that the outbreaks in various parts of the country put “the entire country at risk” and “clearly we don’t have this under control.” Fauci also said that there is no guarantee that we will have a safe and effective vaccine, but we will probably know the extent of efficacy sometime in the winter or early part of next year.

“I can’t make an accurate prediction, but it is going to be very disturbing, I will guarantee you that, because when you have an outbreak in one part of the country even though in other parts of the country they’re doing well, they are vulnerable. I made that point very clearly last week at a press conference. We can’t just focus on those areas that are having the surge. It puts the entire country at risk. We are now having 40,000+ new cases a day. I would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 a day if this does not turn around. And so I’m very concerned.”

Earlier in the hearing, Fauci warned that some states are “skipping over” checkpoints in the federal reopening guidelines and that this is leading to new hotspots in states such as Texas, Florida and Arizona.

Key Points
Significant increase in cases in the southeast and southwest areas of the United States.

Jurisdictions with upward trajectory of new cases continues to increase.

Increase positive test results are due to increased testing, community transmission, and outbreaks.

Hospitalizations are going up in 12 states.

Daily death stats have increased in Arizona.

Fauci stated that even states and localities that “did it right” regarding reopening still have individuals who engaged in an “all or none phenomenon” — disregarding social-distancing measures and face mask usage while being out socially.
