YouTube banned three prominent commentator channels from the video-sharing platform on Monday, June 29, 2020. Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke, so-called white nationalist Stefan Molyneux and so-called white nationalist Richard B. Spencer were accused of violating the YouTube’s ‘hate speech’ policies.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the video streaming giant said channels belonging to Duke and far-right commentators Stefan Molyneux and Richard Spencer had been terminated for claiming that members of minority groups were inferior, according to a Verge report.

“We have strict policies prohibiting hate speech on YouTube, and terminate any channel that repeatedly or egregiously violates those policies … After updating our guidelines to better address supremacist content, we saw a 5x spike in video removals and have terminated over 25,000 channels for violating our hate speech policies.”

YouTube stated that the dumped channels violated the platform’s policies prohibiting YouTube videos with links to off-platform hate content, violated rules prohibiting channel publishers from making claims of inferiority about a protected group.

YouTube, Facebook and Twitter are social media and Internet platforms that have continued to remove or censor content which is considered hate speech or misinformation.

Twitter recently flagged tweets from both President Trump and his campaign on the grounds of misinformation, manipulated media or promotion of violence.

Facebook, regarding it management of hate speech and misinformation, has also experienced boycott pressure by multiple advertisers including The North Face, Denny’s, REI, Honda, Levi Strauss, Verizon, Coca-Cola, Hershey’s, and Starbucks. Some companies had already reduced ads because of the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.
