Police and paramedics on scene after a crash involving a teen bicyclist and an Arlington Heights police SUV at a 4-Way stop intersection at Ridge Avenue and Campbell Street in Arlington Heights.
Police and firefighter/paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 12:35 a.m. Monday May 18, 2020 to a report of a police vehicle crash with a bicyclist.
A police officer requested paramedics immediately after the crash. The teen was up and walking after the crash. She was assessed by paramedics, and refused transportation to the hospital with no injuries or a minor injury. She appeared to point to her leg before walking into the ambulance, and was supported by a paramedic who helped her walk to the ambulance.
Arlington Heights police report that the police officer was driving the SUV eastbound on Campbell, and came to a complete stop at the 4-way stop sign at the intersection of Ridge Avenue and Campbell Street.
After stopping for the stop sign, the police officer accelerated at slow speed eastbound on Campbell Street. Prior to the collision, the police officer did not see the bicyclist — a 17 year-old female who was wearing dark clothes and riding a bike with no light.
The female bicyclist was southbound on the northbound side of Ridge Avenue, and did not stop for her stop sign at the 4-way stop intersection.
The bicycle and bicycle rider collided with the front bumper of the police SUV in a low speed collision. After the crash, the bicycle was down in the roadway at the southeast corner of the intersection close to the front of the police SUV.
The bicyclist’s cell phone was down near the curb — a few more feet east of the bicycle. The rider’s cell phone fell to the ground, but it was unknown whether the phone was in hand or in a pocket.
The National Weather Service at O’Hare International Airport reported Rain Fog/Mist with visibility 3.00 miles at 11:51 p.m. Sunday May 17, 2020; and Light Rain Fog/Mist with visibility 4.00 miles at 12:51 a.m. Monday May 18, 2020. There was fog at the time of the crash that obscured visibility, but the fog was not thick.
A police officer picked up the bicyclist’s dad at home, and drove him to the scene. The teens father rode the bicycle home, although the chain was knocked off the gear.
No citations were issued to the teen bicyclist. The bicyclist told the police investigator that she didn’t stop because she thought the police vehicle was going to yield and let her go through the intersection.
