Enemy comes from the 9th century Latin word inimi, derived from Latin for “bad friend” (Latin: inimicus). “Enemy” is a strong word, and “emotions associated with the enemy could include anger, hatred, frustration, envy, jealousy, fear, and distrust. As a political concept — an enemy in worst case scenarios — can be engaged with hate, violence, battle and war. The opposite of an enemy is a friend or ally. Because the term “the enemy” is a bit strong to use in polite society, informal substitutes are more often used (e.g., unfriendly, foe, adversary). In any case, the designation of an “enemy” exists solely to denote the status of a particular person or group of people as a threat to a multitude of possibilities — personal safety, reputation, business profitability, etc.). A government may seek to represent a person or group as a threat to the public good by designating that person or group to be a public enemy.

11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

— Ephesians 6:11-12

For Christians, the enemy is the devil — a real, personal entity often known as Beelzebub, Lucifer, the Prince of Darkness, Satan, the father of lies, the Accuser of the brethren, and the Deceiver of the World. The enemy is not the individual people who oppose you, but the group of people and concepts at Satan’s disposal that are identified with the patterns of the source of evil. To Christians, the enemy is Satan, who uses forces, circumstances and people at his disposal. Ultimate agents of Satan support the concept that there is no Satan and no evil in the world to distract the vulnerable from knowing their true enemy.
