High School District 214 Cancels All Out-of-the-Country Student Trips for the Month of March 2020

#ad▼

Out of an “abundance of caution” High School District 214 is canceling all out-of-the-country student trips and tours that had been planned for the month of March 2020. One of those trips canceled was a spring break trip to Milan, Italy that the Wheeling High School was planning.

On Saturday, February 29, 2020 the US Department of State issued an Italy Travel Advisory Level 3, which is the “Reconsider Travel” advisory category.

The US Department of State also issued a Level 4 Advisory “Do not travel” for Lombardy, Italy and Veneto, Italy due to the level of community transmission of the virus and imposition of local quarantine procedures. Milan is the capital of Lombardy — a region in Northern Italy. The advisory also reported concern that widespread sustained community spread has been reported in Italy.

Other countries with recent Level 4 advisories with mention of coronavirus disease risk are Iran and China. Several other countries have standing Level 4 Advisories for violence-related risks.

District 214 Letter Sent Early March

Dear Parents,

Out of an abundance of caution, High School District 214 is canceling all out-of-the-country student trips and tours that had been planned for the month of March. District administrators reached this decision after thorough deliberation and assessment of the evolving circumstances involving the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

District 214 did not make this decision lightly but believes this course of action is consistent with 214’s ongoing commitment to ensure that the health and safety of students and our staff remains our top priority.

Building administrators will communicate with students and parents regarding any additional details of each cancellation or postponement. It is possible that some trips could be rescheduled for a later date, once the virus situation has stabilized.

In addition, if you or your student has recently traveled overseas or plans to travel overseas, we ask that you report this information to your building administration. In addition to those individuals returning from mainland China, students who have travelled to or had stopovers in countries that are considered Level 3 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or higher should self-quarantine for 14 days. Information for travellers can be found on the CDC website: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html

In the meantime, please know that our building and grounds teams are actively cleaning and sanitizing high touch places in the buildings such as desks, handrails, doorknobs, computer keyboards, faucet handles, phones etc. We are reviewing plans for school closings should the need arise and what arrangements can be made for online learning.

As fundamental as this information is, it bears repeating that to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, please remind your student to consistently utilize the following preventative actions:

Cover your cough or sneeze
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
See your doctor if you have a fever, cough, body aches, and fatigue
Stay home and limit contact with others if you are sick
As the local, state and national landscapes continue to evolve, the District and school administration will remain vigilant and continue to keep you informed on how this impacts your student and District 214.

Sincerely,

David R. Schuler, Ph.D.

Superintendent
