Police and firefighter/paramedics from Hoffman Estates responded about 2020 to a report of a rollover semi-trailer truck crash with a trailer that lost its load and spilled fuel. Illinois State Police first on the scene reported the driver was trapped in the truck. The bobtail or truck cab was in the left lane (lanes 1 and 2), and the trailer was on the right wall or shoulder at Mile Post 58 3/4 (just south of the Sears Centre Arena).
Hoffman Estates Engine 24’s crew on arrival reported a trailer on one side of the eastbound lanes and the cab by the jersey wall with a confirmed extrication. Firefighters also reported diesel fuel across all lanes. The driver was extricated by 12:03 p.m. and was transported to a hospital with injuries that initially appeared to be non-life-threatening.
An initial incorrect report stated the semi-trailer truck was westbound on I-90 and rolled over the center wall and the bobtail and trailer came to rest on the eastbound lanes of I-90. The truck was eastbound when it crashed but some debris from the eastbound lanes flew over the wall into the westbound lanes. Tollway crews also used a plow to push debris off the tollway and sand to absorb oil and diesel that was spread across all eastbound lanes.
The load on the trailer was several thousand pounds of firewood that was spilled between the trailer and the wall.
The crash was affecting traffic in both directions but caused a complete road block in the eastbound lanes. Traffic in the eastbound lanes at times was backed up to Route 25 and Route 31 and in between an hour after the crash. Westbound lanes were also temporarily backed up while debris slowed traffic and motorists in the opposite lanes of the crash slowed down to take a look at the crash.
