Apartment Fire Displaces 37 Residents on Butrick St Near Clarkson St, Waukegan

An apartment fire in north suburban Waukegan left 37 people out in the cold (CBS Chicago/CapturedNews).

Police and firefighter/paramedics from Waukegan responded about 6:40 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, 2020 to an apartment fire in the block of 300 Butrick Street. No injuries were reported in the apartment fire in south central Waukegan.

Two apartment units sustained significant fire damage, and other apartment units were damaged by smoke and water. Residents living in the fire-damaged units will be displaced for several weeks. Residents living in the apartment units that sustained only smoke and water damage may be able to return to their apartment units in a few days. A total of 37 residents were temporarily displaced.

The American Red Cross was dispatched to the scene to assist displaced residents with housing.

Initially, there is no official information release regarding the cause of the fire, but the fire may have started outside moving from the exterior and extending into the building on the second floor. The apartment building is a 2 1/2-story brick apartment building with exterior wood stairs to the second floor, and an exterior balcony on the first floor.

The apartment building is located across Clarkson Street from Miguel Juarez Middle School. The fire occurred in the apartment building after school hours.
