3 Critically Injured, Trapped in Car; Pedestrian Critically Injured When Metra Train Hits Car and Car Hits Pedestrian, 87th St and Pulaski Rd, Chicago, Hometown

A Metra train first hit a car at 87th Street and Pulaski Road, and that car then hit a pedestrian. CBS 2’s Tara Molina reports.

Hometown firefighter/paramedics and Chicago firefighters and paramedics responded about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 12, 2020 to a crash involving a Metra train and passenger vehicle with a person pinned under the train at 87th Street and Pulaski Road in Chicago’s Scottsdale neighborhood near Hometown, Illinois. Battalion 20 reported a Metra train stopped at the intersection of 87th Street and Pulaski Road.

Truck 31’s crew reported a pedestrian down on the north side of the tracks. Battalion 20 requested a pin-in response by 7:36 p.m. Three ambulances were dispatched and Hometown also had an ambulance on the scene.

Hometown firefighter/paramedics were treating one person with CPR while Chicago was working extrication for three victims trapped in a red Hyundai. Two patients were extricated by 7:43 p.m., and the third patient was extricated by 7:45 p.m., and Squad 5’s crew as part of a pin-in response was returned before their arrival on the scene.

Metra officials said that about 7:30 p.m., southbound Train Number 833 struck a car at 87th Street and Pulaski Avenue. After the train hit the vehicle, the vehicle hit a pedestrian that was near the crossing. Train Number 833 was scheduled to arrive at the Orland Park 179th Street station at 8:02 p.m. and remained stopped at the scene.

The crash scene was near the northeast corner of Hometown, Illinois, which is a small city with a population of about 4,300 people in Worth Township. Also a suburb of Chicago, the Hometown borders the City of Chicago to the north, Evergreen Park to the east, and Oak Lawn to the south and west.

The crash is under investigation by Metra police. The intersection of 87th Street and Pulaski Road is located directly on the railroad grade crossing. Both 87th Street and Pulaski Road also intersect with Southwest Highway, forming a triangle just west and north of the railroad tracks.
