Child and Adult Killed in Apartment Fire on 12th Place Just East of Cicero Ave, Cicero

A 5-year-old and a male adult were killed in an apartment fire that spread to a second building.

Police and firefighter/paramedics from Cicero responded just after midnight Tuesday February 4, 2020 to a report of an apartment fire with a child trapped in the block of 4700 West 12th Place in Cicero.

Initially a boy, age 5, was confirmed dead, and an elderly adult male was missing, and then discovered several hours later. Several hours later both victims were declared dead. The boy, the elderly man’s grandson, was found unresponsive on the second floor early during firefighting operations.

The American Red Cross was dispatched to assist 15 people displaced by the apartment fire.

Firefighters fought the extra-alarm fire for over two hours. Fire authorities stated that wind conditions added to difficulty extinguishing the fire, as the fire was enhanced by the wind. The wind at 12:53 a.m. Tuesday was North 16 and gusting to 26 MPH at 12:53 a.m. and at 1:53 a.m. according to the National Weather Service station at Midway International Airport, just south of the fire scene.

A MABAS 11 Box Alarm (Box #100) was activated at 12:08 a.m. Mutual aid fire crews were assigned from Berwyn, Lyons, North Riverside, and Stickney.

An Oak Park fire crew was assigned to a Cicero fire station for standby.

A Second Alarm was activated for Box #100 at 1:38 a.m. Mutual aid fire crews were assigned from Bedford Park, Forest Park, Oak Park, River Forest, and Riverside.

A Brookfield fire crew was assigned to fire station standby.

The Box Alarm was struck out at 3:58 a.m.
