Pit Bull attacks and kills Welsh Corgi at Ridge Ave and Chestnut Ave in Arlington Heights
Arlington Heights police responded about 12:28 p.m. Monday January 27, 2020 to a report that a pit bull was attacking a dog on a sidewalk near Walnut Avenue and Chestnut Avenue. Police responded immediately, but the dog was dead before police arrived.
Neighbors Alice Sylvester and Robyn Hawkins explained the incident, which started at a corner at Ridge Avenue and Chestnut Avenue and ended near Walnut Avenue and Chestnut Avenue.
The dog’s owner Alice Sylvester, who lives in the neighborhood, was walking her 2 year-old female Welsh Corgi. She was at the corner of Ridge Avenue and Chestnut Avenue when she noticed a dog was loose without a leash while the owner was calling for the dog. When the loose dog saw Alice and her dog, Yo-Yo, the pit bull charged, and immediately began biting and chewing the rear end of her Welsh Corgi and violently shaking it, like in a ‘kill motion.’ The female owner of the pit bull was able to come up behind the dog and get the leash on her dog, and the dogs were separated.
Alice Sylvester noticed that her own dog could no longer walk and picked her up. She began to walk home while carrying her dog. She thought the incident was over, but then she heard the owner yelling, “the dog is free!” Sylvester turned and saw the pit bull charging them again. She looked down and saw the pit bull was chewing and mauling her dog in an aggressive and horrible way while she was still carrying Yo-Yo. While she was holding her Corgi in her arms and trying to get away, the pit bull was just not stopping. She said there was nothing she could do to keep the dog away.
Somehow, her Corgi came out of her arms back to the ground, but she was still pulling on the leash. The pit bull was relentless while Alice Sylvester struggled to rescue her dog — traveling a whole block length. Then somehow her Corgi slipped out of her collar, and Alice Sylvester knew it was over, and that she couldn’t protect her anymore. She witnessed her dog die on the sidewalk.
A neighbor “Tom” ran over and was able to help get the pit bull away from her 22-pound Corgi during the first attack, and returned to help again during the second attack.
The Arlington Heights police arrived quickly, but the incident happened so fast that they were only able to help by covering the dead dog, and taking it to Care Animal Hospital to be cremated. Alice Sylvester said the vet and the police said this was the worst dog attack they had ever seen.
Neighbors said they heard the dog had attacked several dogs before, but didn’t know of any serious injuries. The dog was described as a 60-pound black-and-white pit bull named Josie that lives at a house on Ridge Avenue just west of Chestnut Avenue. Neighbors believe the dog was not immediately impounded.
People shared the news on the social media service NextDoor. One neighbor on the scene Thursday said they are used to staying wary of threats from coyotes running through the neighborhood, but didn’t expect a dog to be a threat with this level of violence. There is a common run of coyotes in west to east direction near the Futabakai school nearby, and across Arlington Heights Road.
The pit bull owner was issued a village ordinance citation for possessing an uncontrolled animal. The pit bull has a valid rabies tag and village pet license, according to the Village of Arlington Heights.
The owner of the pit bull is due at the Rolling Meadows Cook County Courthouse in Rolling Meadows on Friday, February 28, 2020 to face the citation. Possessing an uncontrolled animal involves a fine of up to $750. The pit bull could also be ordered impounded or euthanized.
