Radar Flight Analysis of Kobe Bryant’s Helicopter Sikorsky Flight Before Crash Northwest of Los Angeles in Foggy Weather

#ad▼

A Sikorsky S-76B Helicopter (N72EX) performing flight from Santa Ana KSNA was transitioning to the west of Van Nuys KVNY along the 101 Freeway in very marginal weather when suddenly crashed in the area of Calabasas.

The S-76B Helicopter (N72EX) took off from KSNA (John Wayne Airport) at 9:06am and followed a northwesterly route towards downtown L.A. staying at around 500ft MSL altitude. Other aircraft in the area were not imported in the radar video presentation.

One commenter, drfaustus72 says, “When SoCal says “too low for flight following” he is NOT saying that the chopper is too low for safety; rather ATC can only offer flight following above certain minimum altitudes based on radar coverage and minimum vectoring altitudes.”

YouTube commenter “drfaustus72” who claims to be a pilot who flies in the SoCal area says, “Flying 140 knots 500ft above the ground in foggy conditions and into a narrow-ish, 3,000ft-mountain-flanked pass is something I would not do.”
