Des Plaines police on Tuesday January 7, 2020 released the identity of the father that was killed on Elmhurst Road south of Golf Road. The high-speed crash occurred Sunday night January 5, 2020 at 7:06 p.m., killing 46-year-old Alejandro Arzeta and seriously injured his teenage son.

Alejandro Arzeta of Des Plaines died as a result of traumatic injuries suffered in the crash on Elmhurst Road, a short distance south of Golf Road.

Arzeta was driving a silver 2008 Nissan Altima while he was exiting a shopping center driveway at the Market Place shopping center in Des Plaines. Alejandro Arzeta was making a right turn to travel northbound on Elmhurst Road from the shopping center driveway when his vehicle was struck on the driver’s side by a 2019 Chevrolet Impala that was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Elmhurst Road. The Chevrolet Impala, which became engulfed in flames, was driven by Eldor Akilov. A Good Samaritan dragged Akilov away from the burning vehicle after Akilov managed to get out of the car on his own.

Arzeta was extricated by Mount Prospect firefighter/paramedics, and was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead. Arzeta’s 13-year-old son, a passenger in his vehicle, was also transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where he was treated for serious injuries. Two days later he was described as being in “stable condition.”

The driver of the white Chevrolet Impala, Eldor Akilov, a 33-year-old resident of Florida, was transported by Elk Grove Township firefighter/paramedics, with police following, to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. He was listed in serious condition, according to Des Plaines Police Department.

An extended on-scene crash investigation closed Elmhurst Road between Golf Road and Dulles Road. Some shopping center driveways were also closed during the crash investigation. The crash investigation is ongoing and charges are pending upon completion of the investigation, according to an initial statement by Des Plaines Police Department.
